Frequently Asked Questions

What is Active KC?

Active KC is a research study and physical activity program that aims to help the Kansas City community move more throughout the day. The program involves educational and motivational text message based communication with participants and monitoring of physical activity through a Garmin Vivofit 4 activity tracker.

What will I be asked to do?

Throughout the program participants will be asked to:

  • Track their daily activity via a Garmin physical activity tracker and Garmin Connect app

  • Receive several text messages throughout the week

How long does the program last?

The program lasts 8 weeks. Text messages for each week of the program will focus on a different activity topic.

Who is eligible to participate?

To be eligible to participate, you must be at least 14 years old and have access to a smart device (phone or tablet) that can send and receive text messages and download apps.

What kind of exercise will I be required to do?

The program does not provide structured activities. Rather, the program provides tips and encouragement that aim to support you to be physically active throughout each day.

Will I receive compensation for participating?

When you enroll in Active KC you will receive a free Garmin Vivofit 4 activity tracker ($80 value).

Why is this considered a research project?

The research aspect of the project aims to learn about participants’ preferences around the application, such as what features of the program you like and what features could be improved. We will ask you to provide this information in two surveys and some participants will be asked to take part in an optional focus group.

How do I know if this program will work for me?

Since this program is fairly new, we are still learning who the program does and doesn't work for. We are hoping you will be willing to help us learn these things. The program has previously been used in parents and children ages 10-12 and most parents and children enjoyed the program.
